This puzzle was created for the Confounding Calendar 2021.
This is my first Cryptic Crossword puzzle. If you haven't solved one before, I hope you'll give it a shot - it's like solving fun, interconnected word riddles (and much more interesting than a "normal" crossword.)
This is a great, simple guide to help you get started solving Cryptics, but the basic idea is: every clue contains two ways to get the answer word you're looking for. Most often that will be a definition and also some wordplay, both hidden within the clue, that will each separately give you the answer word. (Though sometimes a clue contains two definitions instead.) The way that a clue sounds on the surface is often just a distraction...

nice little puzzle, solved in order 3 1a 1d 5 2 4, although I'm sure my word for 2 is correct I don't really understand how it works in the cryptic meaning lol

this is the first cryptic I’ve tried, after being vaguely interested in them for a while – thank you! really fun, and not too difficult (which was very nice)
